Gaelic Storm on Cold Pizza
by John Wildman
On Friday, February 13th, Ryan Lacey and his band Gaelic Storm shook
off the early morning cobwebs to energize ESPN's talk show Cold Pizza at
the show's studio in New York's Manhattan Center. Prior to playing a note
before the cameras, Gaelic Storm had already impressed the crew to such an
extent that they were introduced by host Jay Crawford as having given the
best performance by a band on the show - in rehearsals. Asked by Crawford
to describe what the band played, vocalist and co-founder, Patrick Murphy
said, "Gaelic Storm is a rip-roaring party that we play for our fans all
across the country. It's an Irish storm. It's a crazy storm." Guitarist
Steve Twigger followed with the well-worn history of how the band landed
on the deck of the movie Titanic. Crawford then asked the group's other
co-founder, Steve Wehmeyer to describe how much the band adheres to a
"traditional" sound. Wehmeyer replied by saying that the band will "vary
it up with a lot a musical flavors." He also joked about the ancient
Irish origins of "the bass and electronic bag pipes." To the enjoyment
of Crawford and lifestyle hostess, Leslie Maxie, Gaelic Storm then tore
into a performance of "Born to Be A Bachelor" with Lacey providing his
trademark energy to the band's efforts. Following a cooking segment, the
band returned to close out the show with a "rip-roaring" performance of
"Beggarman," complete with Wehmeyer on the digeradoo. "Vary it up," they do.
